Banana boat is a descriptive nickname that was given to fast ships, also called banana carriers, engaged in the banana trade. They were designed to transport easily spoiled bananas rapidly from tropical growing areas to North America and Europe. They often carried passengers as well as fruit.[1][2]

During the first half of the twentieth century, the refrigerated ships, such as SS Antigua and SS Contessa, engaged in the Central America to United States trade also operated as luxurious passenger vessels. Surplus naval vessels were converted in some cases in the search for speed with Standard Fruit converting four U.S. Navy destroyer hulls, without machinery, to the banana carriers Masaya, Matagalpa, Tabasco and Teapa in 1932.[3][4] Transfers to naval service served as transports and particularly chilled stores ships such as USS Mizar, the United Fruit passenger and banana carrier Quirigua, and the lead ship of a group that were known as the Mizar class of stores ships. Modern banana boats tend to be reefer ships or other refrigerated ships that carry cooled bananas on one leg of a voyage, then general cargo on the return leg.

The large fruit companies such as Standard Fruit Company, United Fruit Company in the United States and Elders & Fyffes Shipping, which itself came under control of the United Fruit Company in 1910, in the banana trade acquired or built ships for the purpose, some strictly banana carriers and others with passenger accommodations.[3][5][6]

United Fruit operated a large fleet, advertised as The Great White Fleet, for over a century until its successor Chiquita Brands International sold the last ships in a sale with leaseback in 2007 of eight refrigerated and four container ships that transported approximately 70% of the company's bananas to North America and Europe.[7][8] At one time the fleet consisted of 100 refrigerated ships and was the world's largest private fleet with some being lent to the Central Intelligence Agency to support the attempted overthrow of the Castro regime in the Bay of Pigs landing.[9]

We came for the weekend. This was the only event we planned and it was fantastic! With adults and kids on the banana boat we all had an amazing time. I absolutely recommend getting the photo package. We loved the whole experience!

From the minute we checked in to the minute we left, we were more friends than customers. They were considerate of the level of comfort of each rider. When the older ones got off they ramped it up for the teens. They really did go above and beyond for our group!! Rode on a boat out to water and able to experience more than the companies that use jet skis.

This is our second trip to Destin and we made sure to come back and ride the banana boat again. This was by far the most fun we've had this summer. Chris and his family are excellent hosts and make sure you have a great time. He actually remembered us from last year. You really don't want to miss this while staying in Destin, especially if you have kids! We will be back again next year.

Come enjoy an exhilarating 30 minute ride aboard the 6 passenger, double sided banana boat. The journey begins as you are pulled through South Beach's beautiful channel by a high powered Hurricane Fundeck. Once out of the channel... the real fun begins! You can expect to be splashed, sprayed and flung around as the banana boat is pulled through the Calibogue Sound. As you try to hold on, take in some of the best views Hilton Head Island has to offer. The banana boat is an exciting activity for kids and adults alike!

We advise our guests to feel comfortable in the water. You will be wearing a life jacket at all times. It is very likely you will fall into the water, but your life jacket will keep you safely afloat. Guests should have enough strength to pull themselves back on to the banana boat/jet skit.

Carmelo Anthony has been many things across a legendary career. All-Star. Scoring champion. Gold medalist. Likely Hall of Famer. One thing he hasn't been, though, is photographed on a banana boat in the Bahamas alongside LeBron James, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade. Despite being widely treated as a member of the banana boat team, Anthony technically was not on the boat with his three fellow stars or Wade's wife, Gabrielle Union, and now, we know why that was.

"I didn't get left out. They were already down there and I was meeting them," Anthony explained. "I had just flown in and we were, like, taxiing to the boat. They were already in the water doing water sports. I see them on the banana boat and I'm just like, 'What is this' And they're like, 'Come on!' And I'm like, 'No, I'm not getting on that s***.'"

When asked to clarify if he was invited onto the boat, Anthony confirmed that he was "informally," saying "it was a hand wave." Still, even if he wasn't technically in the picture, he considers himself a part of the banana boat family. "I am an extension, I am a banana boat family," Anthony said. "They got on me one time, 'why you keep saying you ain't a banana boat,' alright man, f*** it, I'm part of the banana boat, f*** it. I wasn't on there, you keep arguing, you keep fighting it."

Anthony doesn't need a boat picture to solidify his membership. Unlike Paul and Wade, he has played in the NBA with multiple members of the banana boat family. He had a brief stint with Paul in Houston and now plays with James in Los Angeles. Now the Lakers are relying on the chemistry of their banana boat duo to help them win a championship, and fortunately, we now know that there are no grudges held over Anthony's absence in the picture.
